Copper; The New Hot Thing in Jewelry Design!

Copper jewelry is everywhere nowadays; exhibitions, fancy stores and little boutiques. I have a little knowledge of copper and was wondering about designers’ big rush for copper and definitely many people’s (waaronder ikzelf) desire to get their hands on the unique affordable designs.

I asked Rana Nader, a Jewelry Designer from Cairo who graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, and who also works as an Oil Painter,

but decided in January 2010 to start her Jewelry Design business after attending a course on Jewelry Design, about Copper Jewelry and why it is so trendy right now. This is because Rana she has been working on copper, silver plated and gold plated designs since her start. Her work is characterized by uniqueness and clear creativity.

There is a common trend in Egypt now with people using copper in their designs, why is that?

I remember vividly when I started my journey with copper jewelry. At the time, you could seldom find anyone use copper. I was actually fighting to get well known. But now, the case is absolutely different’ many people now use copper in their designs as it’s beautiful, different and affordable.

Do people favor copper? Why?

Yes, lots of people do. Like I said, it’s affordable and helps a designer create shapes and styles that can make women and girls look unique. When I do my pieces for instance, I try every time to do things that my clients won’t find anywhere else and copper helps me do so.

I have read that there are copper jewelry and brass designs, what is the difference? And what is more common? And how can you tell the difference?

There are two colors; yellow and red. Yellow goes for brass, which can be used instead of gold plated wire, while red goes for copper. Not so many people know that, and it doesn’t make a big difference for clients. They pick what they find special. Both of copper and brass can be easily treated. It’s also beautiful when you merge yellow and red together.

What styles bring about the beauty of copper? Traditional classic stuff or new crazy designs?

Maybe, the best thing about copper is that it’s extremely flexible and can go with all styles. As for me, I enjoy doing modern,classic and even crazy designs.

What’s your biggest dream as a designer?

I am very passionate about my work and always eager to bring about the beauty that I see in every woman and girl I meet. Onlangs, I have started thinking of using copper in my art pieces to become decorative pieces in every home, as it can be easily shaped and modeled. Thankfully, my educational background and my friends and family have supported and helped me a great deal. I am very lucky for that and this pushes me to improve myself and my brand.
